About Club
Our Style of Judo Practice
If you are new to Judo, this article at Judoinfo is always a good place to start. We at Knoxville Judo Club, in addition to training in all of the typical aspects of Judo, emphasise the development of the technical excellence and mental toughness.
Cost to Join
Knoxville Judo Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and popularization
of this excellent martial art.
Therefore, there are no contracts to sign, there is no expensive equipment to buy,
and there are no excessive rank promotion fees.
Our monthly fees are low as well: $25 per person or $35 per family.
We only require our members to join national Judo organization - USJA ($40/year),
and to pay the promotion fees to USJA so that our ranks are nationally and internationally recognized.
We also have a special, wholesale contract with the most reputable Judo uniforms suppliers
in North America including Hatashita Sports,
so our members pay the lowest possible price for the best possible uniforms.
Training and Classes
We meet officially twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but if there is a need (e.g. tournament
or promotion preparations) we can run up to five practices a week.
Format of the practice at the club is flexible. Focus of our training is on the practical
application of the skill, on the technical excellence, but mostly on the needs of the each individual.
Every member of the club receives absolutelly maximal level of personal attention.
Mutual respect and welfare towards each other are expected.
Judo can be a very dangerous activity if practiced
unsafely or carelessly, so we closely follow Dr. Kano's central maxim of Judo: "Mutual Welfare
and Benefit".
Judo training at our club consists of:
-
Specific Judo training - ukemi, nage waza and ne waza uchi komi and nage komi, randori and kata
Differentiated fitness regimen - periodization, high intensity interval training, circuit
training, rest and endurance training
Sports psychology - goal setting, simulation and visualization,

Expectations About Ranks and Promotions
Judoinfo has an excellent article
about the meaning of the black belt in Judo.
Expectation from a new member is that
he or she will train hard in pursuit of excellence in this combat sport and a martial art.
How quickly will one progress through Judo depends mostly on the ability of the individual,
intensity of the training and overall attitude.
Usually, one gets promoted every six months, but again, progress through ranks depends on the individual.
We can only promise a very hard work and a high quality of instruction.
Everything else is up to the Judoka himself or herself.
One trains Judo to get stronger, tougher and better equipped to handle oponents in the competition
or in a peril. Belt, without practical skill and fighting spirit, is meaningless.
Greatest "promotions" in Judo come as one, who gets to learn how to consistently and effectively
apply throws and submissions, earns the sincere admiration and respect of his or her fellow Judoka.
